A genetic map of the British population

Published by Kenneth S. Doig

(websource)
This article is a review that presents a genetic map of the British Isles from an upcoming study by Leslie et al. (2014) that is listed in the references as being "in press" in Nature.

This may very well be the big POBI study of the British Isles that has been talked about for years now.

Genetic Characterization of Human Populations: From ABO to a Genetic Map of the British People

Walter Bodmer

From 1900, when Landsteiner first described the ABO blood groups, to the present, the methods used to characterize the genetics of human populations have undergone a remarkable development.

Concomitantly, our understanding of the history and spread of human populations across the earth has become much more detailed. As has often been said, a better understanding of the genetic relationships among the peoples of the world is one of the best antidotes to racial prejudices.

Such an understanding provides us with a fascinating, improved insight into our origins as well as with valuable information about population differences that are of medical relevance. The study of genetic polymorphisms has been essential to the analysis of the relationships between human populations.

The evolution of methods used to study human polymorphisms and the resulting contributions to our understanding of human health and history is the subject of this Perspectives.

From Icelanders to Sri Lankans, some 3-billion people speak the (far more than..) more than 400 languages and dialects that belong to the Indo-European (IE) family.

Map of both the prevailing hypotheses on early Indo-European ethnogenesis & origins) the more-widely accepted Steppe/Kurgan hypothesis [Gimbutas, M, et al.] b) the less-widely accepted Anatolia-hypothesis [Renfrew, C, et al.] {map was already on article. Caption, written by K.S. Doig}

Some researchers hold that an early Indo-European (IE) language was spread by Middle-Eastern farmers around 8,000–9,500 years ago (see ‘Steppe in time’).

A reader emails a link (pdf) to a recent paper from Rindermann:

Studies investigating evolutionary-theories on the origins of national differences in intelligence have been criticized on the basis that both national cognitive-ability measures and supposedly evolutionarily informative proxies (such as latitude and climate) are confounded with general-developmental status.

"TEDxCambridge : George Church on genomics and human-diversity"

PUBLISHED BY KENNETH S. DOIG
(from "race/history/evolution notes")

Posted on 4/22/2012: by N/A

"George Church considers recent advances in genomics and personalized medicine and asks: as we seek to eliminate disorders like schizophrenia and dyslexia, or even rare genetic diseases, how should we think about preserving human diversity?" Slide at 7:20:

"Rare [does not necessarily equal] Deleterious
MSTN: Lean muscles
LRP5: Extra-strong bones
PCSK9: Greatly reduced risk of heart disease
CCR5: Virus-resistance

Embrace the extremes: informative, easy, powerful"
Conclusion: "So anyway we and others are sequencing these long-lived animals and humans and we hope this will be part of a bigger project to measure and design humans going forward."

"Some asshole named "Ken Weiss" wants whole genome sequencing to go away"

PUBLISHED, EDITED, ANNONATED (IN RED) & IMAGES ADDED BY KENNETH S. DOIG
There are various informal indicators that funders are losing enthusiasm for human whole genome sequencing. [. . .] If this turns out to be more than a few anecdotes or personal opinions, and is actually occurring, it's understandable and to be lauded.
As we think we can truthfully claim, we have for years been warning of the dangers of the kind of overkill that genomics (and, indeed, other 'omics' fads) present: promise miracles and you had better deliver!
The same thing applies to evolutionary studies that seek whole genome sequences as well as to studies designed to use such data to predict individual diseases.

A new paper in PLoS ONE, Genetic Population Structure Analysis in New Hampshire Reveals Eastern European Ancestry, tells us little that wasn't already obvious: genetic distinctions can be drawn among "white" Americans. Unfortunately, only 960 SNPs, mostly on "suspected cancer susceptibility genes", are used for the structure analysis, and most of the clusters reported (for example, Jewish-French Canadian-Candian Indian) don't seem terribly meaningful.
.
   NORDIC-CANADIAN                                       ARMENIAN-AMERICAN

"Eastern European ancestry" is mentioned in the title only because "Finnish and Russian/Polish/Lithuanian ancestries were most notably found to be associated with genetic substructure" in this data set. As we've seen repeatedly, with more markers, clear and meaningful genetic substructure is apparent throughout Europe and across various European ancestry groups in the US.
